Range Rover Velar Gives Rivals A Run For Their Money

After test driving a Range Rover Velar on both public roads and track, MotorWeek claims ďitís up to the rest of the segment to see if they can keep up with the Velar.Ē High praise for a SUV in an increasingly competitive segment.

Known for their posh off-roaders, Land Rover has created another high fashion vehicle. Shopper will find the exterior clean yet aggressive; featuring a floating roof design, iconic body proportions, set of 22-inch wheels, sporty fender trim and pop-out door handles. For those who needs an extra dash of luxury, the Velar is offered with various leather packages, and extremely comfortable seats. Even your rear seat passengers will be swaddled in in luxury.

Speaking of its cabin, the Velarís interior space is among best in class with 34.4 cubic-ft cargo space and 70.1 cubic-ft if you fold the 40/20/40 split seatbacks down.

As for performance, their 3.0-liter supercharged V6 powered Velar delivers an impressive 380 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque to an all-wheel-drive system via a standard ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Thatís good enough to launch the SUV from 0-60 mph in just 5.5-seconds. While some may be disappointed with the Velarís droning engine noise, its braking power and off-road capabilities may help potential buyers overlook the lackluster sound department.

With so much going for the Range Rover Velar, competing automakers may need to use it as a benchmark for future models.

Well for what you're paying for a Velar, I'd think it would be a strong rival in the segment for other automakers. Even better if they use it as a benchmark and have the 40/20/40 split seatbacks as standard. That's actually enough of a deciding factor for me to look elsewhere.

I think the main problem with the Velar is where it sits within its own lineup. There wont be much incentive for Evoque owners to trade up, and we certainly wont see any Sport owners trade down. Its great however that Range Rover has finally introduced a new model, and that it features more unique styling cues such as the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. I think we'll start to see more cars with duo touchscreen set ups in the future.
